ABERGAVENNY's wheelchair athletics star Dan Lucker insists he's happy to put his Commonwealth Games ambitions on ice for four years if he fails to make the cut in time for October.

The 17-year old world junior champion captured double gold in the 200m and 400m at the Welsh Championships and Commonwealth Trials in Cardiff but fell short of the qualification standard required for the 1,500m – the only wheelchair event being held in Delhi.

With his 1,500m personal best currently sitting at 3:22.11 minutes, the youngster still has nearly 13 seconds to knock off his time to reach the standard of 3:09.20 by the end of August.

And while Lucker is adamant his PB will have improved by then, he admits he is content to wait four years to challenge the Commonwealth elite.

"I don't know whether I would still go if I didn't get the standard – I guess it would depend how close I was to it," said Lucker, who is part of the Original Source-funded UKA Heroes initiative.

"It would be the biggest competition I've been to and would be a brilliant experience considering how young I am.

"But I'm not too fussed if I don't make it this year. Obviously I really want to go and I'm trying to make the standards but because of my age, if I did go, I wouldn't be close to getting a medal.

"It would be a great experience but I know there'll be a time in the future when I'll be there and competing for medals."

While Lucker's Commonwealth dream may seem like a distant prospect, he insists January's World Championships in New Zealand are a different matter.

The teenager also remains adrift of the standards for the World Championships with his 800m personal best effort of 1:47.02 from last week's IWAA International just over seven seconds slower than the UK Athletics standard.

But with potential spots available in the 4x400m and 4x100m relays, Lucker – who flies out to the Swiss Open in Arbon this weekend – is adamant he's not so far from making the grade.

"I'm quite a bit off the standards for the worlds but it's a little different because I think my best shot at a medal would come in the relay," said Lucker. "So if I could get in the squad, it would be fantastic.

"The track was quite slow in Cardiff so I wasn't really expecting to get a really good time. Noone really went out there trying to set a marker either and the races were quite tactical.

"I was quite pleased with my 400m time – but for the other three, the races were too slow to be getting qualification times for the worlds.

"But I've got some quick races coming up. I'm competing in all five distances in Arbon it is a much faster track so those races should be quicker."
