A popular Abergavenny tree swing is no more after the tree it hung from fell foul of Storm Hannah in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The swing which had swung stoically and serene in the Croesonen Parc field for a number of years, will never swing again after the branch which supported it was shattered by the hurricane harlot as she passed our way in the wee small hours.

An eyewitness in the immediate aftermath of the disaster told the Chronicle, “What happened was the tree was split into two by the storm and the council obviously decided that the section which was remaining upright was too dangerous to leave, so they cut that down too and now there’s nothing.

“It’s a tragedy. I used to sit on that swing in all seasons. Come rain or shine it was a lovely place to rock furiously back and forth on and just chill.”

The eye witness, who wishes to remain anonymous, added, “The old field now feels naked without that swing and one has to wonder if the powers that be will provide any alternative sites for those looking to swing in Abergavenny.

“However, you have to be philosophical about such things. Nature’s a cruel mistress and you can’t stop the winds of change blowing both fair and foul. At least the council workmen left the stump for us to sit on and ponder life’s great complexities in peace.”
