THE Welsh Liberal Democrats have elected Kirsty Williams, AM for Brecon and Radnorshire, as their first ever female leader in Wales.

Kirsty takes over from Mike German, who has led the Lib Dems in Cardiff Bay since devolution began in 1999, to become the first female leader of a political party in Wales.

In this historic election, Kirsty gained 59.9 per cent of the members vote while Jenny Randerson gained 40.1 per cent of the vote. The all member ballot saw a turnout of 69.44 per cent.

Christine Humphreys, President of the Welsh Liberal Democrats said, "After weeks of campaigning from both sides, today is a culmination of the hard work both have put in. Welsh Liberal Democrats have chosen to elect Kirsty as their new leader. The first female leader in Welsh politics. "I know that Kirsty is ambitious about bringing some major changes to Wales - I can't wait to start working with her to make it happen."

Congratulating Kirsty, Roger Williams, MP for Brecon and Radnorshire and Liberal Democrat Shadow Secretary of State for Wales, said, "I am delighted that Kirsty Williams has been elected as the new leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats and that she has become the first female leader of a Welsh Party.

"I am sure that Kirsty will make a great leader who will convey our message and aims to the people of Wales.

"I have worked closely with Kirsty for a number of years as we represent the same constituency and I know that she is a hardworking, intelligent and highly motivated politician who will take the party forward and tackle the failed policies of the Labour-Plaid coalition head-on.

"I look forward to continuing to work closely with Kirsty in future and taking the party forward, both in Cardiff and Westminster.

"I would also like to congratulate Jenny for running a very good campaign and, although I am sure she will be disappointed at the result, I am also sure that she will remain a driving force within the Liberal Democrats and Welsh politics."
