A housefire in Gilwern is being treated as arson police have confirmed.

Firefighters worked through the night on Saturday to tackle the blaze at a house at Dan-y-Craig between Gilwern and Crickhowell amid fears that people were trapped inside.

Five fire engines and three jets were used to put out the blaze which started in a two storey house on Crickhowell Road which was ’well alight’ by the time emergency services arrived.

Crews from Brynmawr were called to the incident at 3.28am on Sunday morning and found the ground and first floor of the building which ablaze with people believed to still be inside.

Firefighters searched the property and after more than an hour confirmed that it was empty

Firefighters were on the scene for six hours. A spokeswoman for South Wales Fire and Rescue said crews were still at the scene damping down the fire and removing roof tiles at around 7.54am on Sunday

A fire investigation is set to begin when it is safe for investigators to enter the house.

A spokeswoman for the Welsh Ambulance Service said they were called to the scene but no treatment was needed.
