A MAN being chased by police fell 50 feet down a cliff after running off from the scene of an attempted theft in Llanelly Hill.

Emergency services scrambled to the cliff at Gelli Felen within the Clydach Gorge on Thursday, October 6 where they found a man in this 30s suffering multiple injuries.

The man was airlifted to Nevill Hall Hospital by a RAF Sea King helicopter with serious leg and shoulder injuries where he remains.

Gwent Police said they were called to an incident of attempted theft on Long Row, Llanelly Hill at 2.10pm. When officers arrived the alleged offender made off from the scene and fell down the cliff side.

When they reached him they administered first aid while waiting for paramedics to arrive.

A spokesman for the Welsh Ambulance Service confirmed they were called at 2.25pm.

One fire engine from Brynmawr, a rescue tender from Ebbw Vale along with Mountain Rescue Teams from Longtown, Central Beacons and Brecon helped with the recovery.

The incident had initially been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) but has since been referred back to Gwent Police to investigate.
