MEMBERS of Help The Aged in Abergavenny enjoyed lunch in a late 16th century coaching inn as part of the charity's Big Summer Picnic.

The group were able to enjoy lunch at The Kings Arms thanks to a grant from Help the Aged to help older people across the UK to beat acute feelings of isolation - sometimes called the summer blues.

The charity's event is designed to create opportunities to socialise and enjoy a good meal in order to relieve the isolation of older people across the UK. The money provided by the charity is designed to help older people's groups and projects with the financial cost of a meal, entertainment, or extra transport so that all members can take part.

Thousands of older people across the UK enjoyed a lunch last year thanks for the Big Summer Picnic and this year hundreds of lunches will be taking place.

Chairman Joy Welsh said, "Summer can be a particularly difficult time for some of the older people who visit our group, especially when friends and family are on holiday and they are left behind. We would like to thank Help the Aged for this grant, it provided a fun and memorable day out for our members."

Iwan Rhys Roberts, spokesman for the charity said, "We are p[leased that we can help Abergavenny with their picnic. We are committed to assisting local community groups in their remarkable work that supports so many older people across the UK. The Big Summer Picnic is one of a range of ways in which we can help to bring people together for what we hope will be a lovely day out. Although a picnic lunch is a special occasion for one day only, the benefits are much longer lasting for those who take part."
