Fairfield Utd - 2

Govilon AFC - 4

GOVILON are through to the last 16 of the County Motors Challenge Cup after beating Fairfield Utd 4-2.

Falling behind after 15 minutes Govilon drew level on the half hour mark when Jamie Laurent, whose surging attacks had given Fairfield early problems, was fouled in the box

Richard McCarthy stepped up to the plate and coolly slotted home from the spot.

Govilon keeper Robert Morrison was called into action to prevent Fairfield restoring their lead immediately before and after the interval.

Govilon edged ahead when Craig Norman picked up the ball in midfield, and his raking 30 yard pass sent Richard McCarthy on his way to produce a left wing cross which enabled Dean Morgan to fire home an unstoppable volley.

Scott Wall was Govilon's next provider, sending Morgan away on a right wing run which saw him check inside and hit home an angled drive.

Fairfield narrowed the gap to one goal after an hour when a Govilon defender slipped on the wet surface and allowed Jenkins to shoot past Morrison.

Fairfield almost drew level moments later when Langford was clear on goal, but with only Morrison to beat he fired wide.

Govilon settled matters in the last five minutes when Craig Thomas' persistence along the  bye-line saw him lay the ball to Matthew Stevens who slotted home to cement Govilon's victory.

On Saturday Govilon begin their defence of the John Payne Barber Gwent FA Amateur Cup when they play Crickhowell away (k.o.2.00pm).

Elsewhere the Abergavenny Thursdays had their wings clipped well and truly by a high flying Abertillery Bluebirds side, who ended the Thursdays' Cup campaign for another year with a resounding 7-0 thrashing.
