As part of the fundraising activities for the forthcoming Monmouthshire and District National Eisteddfod of Wales, St Mary’s Priory Church is to host a special Come and Sing Messiah on Saturday, 6 February. Many singers are dusting off their scores and fine-tuning their voices in preparation for the big day, including members of three local choral organisations: the Crickhowell and Monmouth Choral Societies, together with the Gwent Bach Society.

“We are all very much looking forward to this”, explained the concert’s conductor, Stephen Marshall; “there’s something special about Messiah that brings out the best in a choir and speaks to an audience. We are lucky enough not only to have massed voices behind this project but also the input of professional players, who will form an orchestra for the evening performance. We are naturally hoping to get a capacity audience for the concert itself (7pm start), since this is an important fundraiser for this year’s National Eisteddfod.”

Audiences will also be able to sample some up-and-coming vocal talent, as local choral scholars take the stage to sing those all-important Messiah solos. “We are again fortunate in having outstanding vocal scholars in the Crickhowell Choral Society, who are keen to bring their talent to this inspiring work. Their contribution will be a breath of fresh air”, claims Steve, “and a definite highlight of the performance”.

“Singers and audience alike are all contributing £10 towards the Eisteddfod appeal fund, which I am sure must be a bargain!” Audience members are accordingly advised to buy their tickets (£10) in advance at Abergavenny Music 01873 853394.
