FOR four years, the Aberglaugh Comedy Club has been busy putting the town on the circuit for up-and-coming and more established comedians.

With monthly nights at the King’s Arms and three events a year at the Borough Theatre, the club is going from strength to strength.

Aberlaugh was founded by gigging comedian Huw Lewis, who felt there was a need for something that would attract pro comedians and those just starting out to Abergavenny.

Huw told the Chronicle, "Prior to setting up Aberlaugh, the Glee Club in Cardiff was probably the closest venue to Abergavenny that staged comedy regularly.

"Four years ago, we were just coming out of Covid, and so everybody needed a laugh more than ever. From the first night, I was pleasantly surprised by how much appetite there was for Aberlaugh in the area."

Since its inception, the comedy club has staged regular nights at the King's Arms Hotel.

Huw explained, "We've received fantastic support from the Kings. Their management and staff just couldn't have been more helpful."

Huw, who is acting MC at all the events, added, "The ethos of the comedy club is simple. We bring pro and semi-pro stand-up comedians from the UK circuit to perform to Abergavenny crowds.

"It's about giving people in the town the opportunity to be entertained on their doorstep.

"Why travel to Cardiff, Bristol, or further afield when you can just stroll into the town centre and have a giggle?"

Of course, Aberlaugh is not all about booking the best in the business; it's also about giving brand new comedians the chance to shine.

"We give as many comedians as possible, a first opportunity to perform a shorter set amongst an experienced bill of acts." Explained Huw.

"Comedy at its best is a communal experience, and we work hard to ensure the crowd feels comfortable, engaged, and part of the evening. It's often chaotic but never boring."

Reflecting on a busy four years, where they've hosted a diverse range of acts, Huw explained, "Aberlaugh has brought stars of TV's live at the Apollo, two former winners of the BBC's New Comedian Of The Year Award, a former British Comedian Of The Year winner and also several stars of Britain's Got Talent, amongst others, to perform on our stage.

"It always pulls a good crowd for a town the size of Abergavenny, and the beauty is you never know what stars of today or the future you might see on any given night."

Following their success at the King's Arms, Aberlaugh now also runs three parallel events a year at the Borough Theatre.

Huw explained, "It's nice to see that there's now a growing stand-up comedy presence in the local area. Alongside the Aberlaugh Comedy Club, there is also the popular Black Mountain Comedy Festival in Crickhowell."

The future definitely looks funny!

Aberlaugh Comedy Club's next event is a Christmas Special at the King's Arms on Monday, December 5 . For more information about all their monthly King's Arms events, check out their Facebook or Instagram page.
