Year 2 pupils at Cantref Primary School are on a mission to revamp a muddy area of the infant playground and create a ‘Super Snack Shack.

The school PTA is contributing some funds towards the refurbishment but the children are intent on raising £3,000 themselves for keys items such as benches, bins and signs.

The aim is to create a comfortable, safe place to eat their fruit snacks and drink their milk which can also be used as an additional outdoor learning area for the whole school.

The children say they enjoy taking their snack breaks outside but currently there are only two benches to sit on and ninety kids using the yard at playtime - so they have to stand up to eat and drink, which isn’t the safest idea when their classmates are running around playing.

Their wish list ‘to make the Snack Shack brilliant’ includes turning the old flower bed into a long bench with room for everyone to sit down - with the new area doubling as an outdoor classroom.

As Cantref is a health-conscious school and pupils are only allowed fruit for their snacks, they would also like to buy a compost bin for their fruit waste - and some netting to spread over the pergola, both for shade and to enable them to grow their own kiwi fruit and grape vines.

They would also like a recycling bin for their milk cartons and some more picnic benches.

The Year 2 children have taken responsibility themselves for raising the money to pay for: 30 Eco wood boards, Eco wood battens and trim, fixings, labour for installing the long bench and flooring, aggregate for flooring, three recycled picnic benches, a fruit recycling bin, a plastic recycling bin, netting and a Snack Shack sign.
