Hundreds of trekkers have signed up to tackle the hills of the Brecon Beacons early next month as part of a charity challenge that equates to walking the circumference of the world.
The event on June 4 will see walkers taking on a combined distance of 27,800km - and it’s not too late to get involved.
Organisers, Global Adventure Challenges have put out a last-minute plea for local trekkers to join in.
Currently in its fourth year, TrekFest is an incredible test of endurance, offering participants the choice of a 25km, 50km, 75km or 100km route.
Participants will cross the highest peaks in the Beacons and South Wales including Pen Y Fan (886m), Corn Du (873m), Cribyn (795m) and Fan Y Big (719m).
Entry is via the website, trekfest.org.uk, and participants can enter as either an individual or a team. Trekkers simply need to pay £65 for the 25km route, which increases to £165 for the 100km route.
All entrants are urged to raise as much as they can for a charity of their choice.
Managing Director and co-founder of Global Adventure Challenges, Peter Robinson, said, “We are delighted that so many participants have already signed up for TrekFest and have pledged to raise thousands of pounds for local charities.
“However, when we did the maths and realised just how far they were trekking in total we thought it would be great to throw down the gauntlet and see if we could get them all the way around the world – a total of 40,075km.
“We are almost three-quarters of the way there and just need an extra 12,275km so we are urging any keen trekkers to don their boots and join us.”
Lining up for the Brecon Beacons trek will be Coronation Street trio Catherine Tyldesley, Katie McGlynn and Tisha Merry who play Eva Price, Sinead Tinker and Steph Britton.
They’re tackling the 50km route to raise money for The Joshua Wilson Brain Tumour Charity and Parkinson’s UK.
Catherine Tyldesley said, “Our team will train hard to make a respectable time, and raise much-needed funds for both charities. We hope to do both of these causes proud, and I’m looking forward to this amazing adventure with a great bunch of friends.”
