THE two public conveniences saved from closure in Gilwern and Grosmont have now been adopted by local community councils .

The day to day running of the toilet block on the main road in Gilwern is being undertaken by Llanelly Community Council and the facility adjacent to the Angel Inn in Grosmont is now being administered by Grosmont Community Council.

Both were transferred by the local authority at the start of the new financial year last week. Monmouthshire County Council offered both councils a £1,200 grant towards the facilities running costs.

Residents in Gilwern had campaigned to save the only public toilet facility in the village, which costs £5,500 a year to run, from closure and amassed a 2,000-named petition to save it from closure.

The facility in Abergavenny's Whitehorse Lane was also faced with closure but remains open following a £9,000 contribution from the town council, which has also offered up to £30,000 towards the refurbishment of the block.

Unaffected are the toilets in Abergavenny's Bus Station, the Brewery Yard development and at Maryport Street in Usk.

However facilities at Castle Street in Raglan have been withdrawn along with those at Usk Island. The Bailey Park loos, which are only open during public events, are also to permanently close.
