A local Fish and Chip shop has been rated as one of the best shops in the UK by the National Federation of Fish Friers.
Mardy Traditional Fish and Chips, situated on the Hereford Road just outside Abergavenny, is a popular restaurant in the local area, and was this week named as one of the 137 UK shops in ‘The NFFF Guide to Quality Fish and Chips 2021’.
Released every year, the National Federation of Fish Fryers’ Guide to Quality Fish and Chip Shops lists businesses up and down the country which have made the grade.
The accreditation recognises the UK’s best quality and best tasting fish and chips, promotes the use of fish sourced from environmentally sustainable stocks and helps raise standards in the UK fish and chip shop sector.
To get in the Guide, shops are judged against a number of criteria including product quality, working practices, customer service and hygiene standards.
The shop in Mardy was one of just seven from Wales to make this year’s Guide list, and has recently been awarded a five-star Quality Accreditation Award from the NFFF as well as receiving the same top mark for food hygiene rating from Environmental Health.
Speaking to the Chronicle following the publication of the Guide, Mardy Fish and Chip shop owner Saul Salway said: “We are thrilled and delighted to be recognised as one of the best Fish and Chip shops in the country by an official body like the NFF.
‘‘We all work very hard to produce the best quality food we can in a sustainable way working with local suppliers and farmers in Monmouthshire to ensure we support the local area.
“I think many people sometimes underestimate our industry and how much work goes into preparing our food so it is nice for myself and my staff especially to know we are appreciated and makes all the effort worthwhile.”
