THERE’S a chance for keen star gazers to see a partial lunar eclipse in the skies above Abergavenny tonight according to the Chronicle’s resident astronomer Jonathan Powell.
" To see the eclipse, try and get the best view of the southeast horizon as possible. Around 9 pm the Moon will rise already in a partially eclipsed state, so it is important you try to view the Moon from a darkened site to really appreciate the presence of the earth’s shadow being cast on the lunar surface," said Jonathan.
A partial eclipse occurs when the earth moves between the Sun and the Moon but not with the three bodies forming a straight line in space as they do with a total lunar eclipse. The eclipse will continue as the moon rises higher in the sky, with the shadow clearing completely an hour after midnight. Also, as a bonus, have a look for a bright ’star’ near to the Moon, this will be the planet Saturn!
This is also a great opportunity for any astro-photographers!
