Ongoing anti-social behaviour in Bailey Park has forced councillors to consider covering the blighted area with security cameras in a bid to catch the culprits.
After instances of vandalism, criminal damage, graffiti, anti-social behaviour and problem drinking, town councillors have pushed for CCTV to deter criminals.
One group, Friends of Bailey Park, have found the fruits of their voluntary work literally ripped from the ground on numerous occasions.
Fences have been repeatedly broken, tree saplings torn from the roots, along which along with drug use and anti-social drinking marr the area.
Regular police patrols have tempered the numerous problems, but town councillors have been pushing for a permanent solution after growing weary of repeat problems in Bailey Park.
At a town council meeting last week, Councillor John Prosser (pictured right) said that CCTV would be a huge step forward in tackling the area’s problems.
“Anti-social behaviour has been an ongoing problem in Bailey Park for quite some time.
“We’ve had trees wrecked, fences smashed, litter and broken bottles strewn all over and problems with drinking.
“We need to be vigilant. A local supplier has offered a new system: CCTV with night vision, which can see the entire park in pitch black.
“I’ve seen a demo and it is absolutely fantastic. You can identify people from 400m away thanks to the zoom facility.
“Meanwhile, the system can be viewed from any device with an internet connection.
“It’s an innovative idea that would solve a lot of our problems,” said Councillor Prosser.
Councillors debated the system’s merits, with all in favour, despite raising questions on access to the system, prompting further debate.
The proposal must now be put through the usual council procedures before any further decisions can be made.
