The Bwlch community came out in numbers on Sunday to rededicate the village’s proud war memorial in honour of those who fell during the Great War.

Raising £10,000 for extensive restorations, Cwmdu and District Community Council, members of the local community and with help from the Powys War Memorial fund, restored the memorial in time for the centenary of the deaths of Private Cyril John (Jack) Powell Corporal Roy James Oldcorn, who both died in battle in 1917.

The council was very pleased to have a considerable amount of military help from the Cadet Executive Officer at Cwrt y Gollen and a platoon of Cadets were on parade and provided a wreath laying party and Buglers to play the Last Post and Reveille. There was also a Standard Bearer on parade.

A large crowd from the local community attended the service and luckily it was a fine day and the Bwlch Village Hall committee laid on refreshments after the service in the Village Hall which had been decorated by the committee and volunteers.

“Our thanks go to all the people and organisations which have ensured that the work could go ahead. Special mentions should go to the residents of Bwlch and The Cwmdu and District Community Council as well as CADW, The War Memorials Trust and Powys County Council Heritage Fund without whose grants the work would not have been able to progress,” said Major (Retd) Bob Doak.
