PLASTIC Free Abergavenny, part of the local Friends of the Earth group, is celebrating a milestone in their campaign to convert Abergavenny into a plastic-free town.

The campaign focuses on single use plastics, used only once and then discarded, such as drinks bottles, straws, cutlery, takeaway coffee cups, cotton buds and bags.

To become an official Plastic Free Town the whole town has to take part – businesses, schools, community groups and local government – and we have to meet objectives set by the SAS in each of these areas.

Organiser, Sue Harrison, states, ‘The good news is that we can easily manage without these plastics or replace them with sustainable, reusable alternatives.

‘We have now achieved our Businesses Objective after completing a survey of food and drink businesses to find out how well they are working towards giving up single use plastics.

‘Thirteen businesses have now replaced at least 3 single use plastic items with reusable, recyclable or compostable alternatives. The owners have been awarded a certificate.’

Businesses include, The Angel Bakery, Annette’s Cafe, The Art Shop and Chapel Cafe, Bean and Bread, The Codfather Fish and Chip Shop, The Cwtch Cafe, Emmeline’s Tearoom, The Fig Tree Expresso, The Grofield Inn, The Little Treat(pictured), The Trading Post, Nicholls Coffee Shop and Y Fenni Steakhouse.

Sue added, ‘We’re sure there are even more champions out there. If you think we’ve missed you please email us at [email protected].
