Blaenavon Blues - 1
Undy Athletic - 0
FOLLOWING the disappointment of back to back defeats to Mardy at the beginning of the month the Blues have now only lost once in their last five outings - crucially to then bottom of the table Spencer Youth and Boys.
But last week the Blues produced a gutsy display to take a point against table toppers Treowen Stars, who look odds on favourites to win the Gwent County league.
On Saturday the Blues welcomed Undy Athletic to the Co-op field, and on a rock hard pitch the Blues hammered out a valuable three points towards league safety.
Looking at the position of the Gwent clubs in Welsh league Division Three, and with up to eight clubs facing relegation, currently only Risca United and Newport Civil Service are in the drop zone, while the Gwent County will almost certainly provide a promotion candidate, that being Treowen Stars or Chepstow Town.
Rhis entails that three Gwent County first division clubs face relegation back into division two. The Blues are just outside what is hoped will be the final drop zone and head Cefn Fforest by four points and by the time this goes to press both clubs will have faced each other last Tuesday evening.
Saturday's win against Undy Athletic will give the Blues a massive boost going into the final run in after Undy ran out 4-1 winners in the reverse fixture only two months ago.
Mike Waite was on target for the Blues after twenty minutes, when his close range shot was deflected past the visiting keeper'.
The game will not live long in the memory, it lacked any real quality mainly due to the hard pitch, but the Blues will be happy to take all three points. Undy never really threatened the Blues even when they dominated possession for large periods during the second half. The only real efforts that came from them were long distance shots, which never worried Blues keeper Jones.
Tonight the Blues travel to Lliswerry for a 6.30pm kick-off before returning to Newport on Saturday to face third-placed Albion Rovers.
Any former players wishing to attend the Re-Union day on Saturday, May 22 are more than welcome. There club is organising a Past versus Present game to say good bye to the Co-op Field, and already a number of former players have come forward to take part. For further details speak to Lee Wathen or email the club on [email protected]">[email protected]
Kick off for the Past versus Present game is 3pm, with refreshments back at the Forgeside Rugby club after the match. I
A Blues spokesman said, "If you're a former player why not pop along, remember you don't have to play in the game, but it would be great to see all the old faces that have represented the club, and played on the old Co-op Field!"
Lliswerry - 2
Govilon - 0
GOVILON came out on the short end of a lacklustre affair last Saturday as Lliswerry put two goals on them to little in way of reply.
Both sides struggled to come to terms with a bone hard pitch and were unable to fashion any chances of note during a fruitless first half.
Lliswerry however took the lead five minutes after the re-start when they were awarded a penalty and Tony Shier made no mistake from the spot.
As much as Govilon battled they were unable to unlock a well marshalled and muscular defence, and they fell further behind midway through the half as Lliswerry grabbed another goal and all three points.
On Saturday Govilon travel to face Chepstow Town (3.00pm).
Elsewhere in Gwent County Division One, a Mardy team who are facing the drop fell foul of Albion Rovers who took them to the cleaners and put them out to dry 1-5.
Meanwhile in Division Three the Abergavenny Thursdays were also in the losing habit after they slumped to a disappointing 3-1 defeat at the hands of Villa Dino/ Christchurch.
