ABERGAVENNY'S junior badminton players rounded off a superb year with excellent performances in two tournaments.
In the Swansea South Wales satellite tournament, strong singles performances saw Tom Whiteman win the U11 boys singles, Morgan Williams win the U11 girls singles, and Robin Freeland obtain his first singles title in the boys U13 singles.
The singles also saw fine performances from Rhys Schanzer (U13) and Evan Williams (U11) who reached the final and semi final respectively.
The boys then underlined their form in the doubles. Williams and Whiteman eased to victory in the U11 boys doubles. Freeland and Schanzer followed up by securing the U13 title.
The Juniors then turned their attention to the highly competitive Mid Wales JSS in Welshpool.
In a high class tournament Evan Williams and Whiteman very narrowly failed to make the U11 singles final against quality opposition.
Morgan Williams also reached the semi final of the U11 girls going out to the eventual winner, and finished runner up in the girl's doubles.
In the U13 singles, James Ellaway played exceptionally to reach the quarter finals, going down by only two points. An excellent performance by Ellaway in his first year in this age group.
Rhys Schanzer, Robin Freeland, and Alison Freeland also turned in good performances across the tournament.
Perhaps the highlight of the day was the superb doubles performances from Williams and Whiteman. The quality and maturity of their play belied their age when securing the Mid Wales JSS U11 doubles title.
The junior players who represented Abergavenny in 2008 did so with determination, good sportsmanship, and great maturity. They are all a credit to the town and to their coaches.
