Dwr Cymru Welsh Water’s latest multi-million pound visitor centre at Llandegfedd Reservoir near Usk has been awarded a special judges’ commendation in the Dewi-Prys Thomas Prize 2015. The award celebrates good design in the built environment in Wales.

The judges commented, “Llandegfedd visitor centre and watersports centre by Hall and Bednarczyk architects are two new buildings that ’sing a duet’ along the shore of the reservoir.

“The visitor centre’s zinc-clad, asymmetrically-curved roof poetically mirrors the surrounding hills and appears to float over the first floor cafe, from which visitors can enjoy a panoramic view across the water.”

The state-of-the-art attraction opened at Easter 2015. The visitor centre contains a stylish restaurant with panoramic views of the reservoir and the watersports centre provides tuition and equipment hire for a wide range of watersports activities.

Sian Robinson, Director of Estates at Welsh Water said, “We’re absolutely delighted that our exciting new development at Llandegfedd has been commended in such a prestigious award. When we were able to open up access to the reservoir at Llandegfedd we were determined that what we constructed would add to the beautiful surroundings. The inspiring buildings do just that and also provide excellent facilities to welcome our visitors.”
