COUNCIL chiefs are seeking to ban the consumption of alcohol in all public places in Abergavenny in a bid to prevent disorder.

In a letter from the Licensing officers at Monmouthshire County Council it states that the 'alcohol free zone' will also include all stairwells within flats, as well as Bailey Park, Fairfield car park.

A map included in the letter shows the area of Abergavenny circled in red which includes Linda Vista Gardens, Castle Meadows, Abergavenny Castle, Mill Street and surrounding areas, Cross Street, the bus station and surrounding areas.

The letter states, "We are doing this under the provisions afforded us in the Police Reform Act 2002. The guidance to the act asks that we consult with all those who may be affected by that ban to ensure that it is not in direct conflict with any other plans in the area, or that it would result in anyone losing their livelihood. The purpose of setting this plan is to prevent disorder."

The officers note that there may be times when an exemption may be requested, such as carnivals, fetes and major events, and say they will consider any application case by case. They hope to bring the ban into place as soon as possible.

Anyone with comments to the proposals can contact Samantha Winn, senior licensing officer, Monmouthshire County Council, County Hall, Cwbran no later than October 9.
