Abergavenny is being given over £28,000 from the Welsh Government to boost the town centre and encourage people to support the high street.

Communities and Tackling Poverty Minister, Lesley Griffiths, has announced that the Welsh Government is investing money to boost high streets and town centres across Wales, coinciding with High Street Week, which is encouraging people to visit the shops and businesses on their local high street.

Abergavenny is one of 20 towns across the country which will receive the funding, which will be used to help increase the number of people visiting the town with ICT exploration and business engagement, the development of e-commerce, bespoke training for local businesses, development of 'Click & Collect' opportunities, co-ordinated events and marketing activities and development of a town app. In addition to Abergavenny, Brynmawr will be receiving over £49,000 to help fund its Arts & Heritage Festival, its Christmas illuminations and Winter Wonderland, its WW1 Exhibition and more, while Blaenavon will get £50,000 for a series of development plans such as a coach park feasibility study, a town co-ordinated clean up, website development and an events package. Lesley Griffiths said, "I am delighted to announce this funding during High Street Week, which is celebrating the vital role town centres and high streets play in creating a sense of community and providing us with a place to shop, do business, socialise and live.   "Our high streets should be the heart of our towns, creating a vibrant local economy and bustling community.   "It is true the tough economic times and the rise in popularity of online shopping have created challenges for our towns and high streets. This new funding I have announced today will be a very welcome boost for our town centres, providing a local, tailored approach to meet their needs."
