Abergavenny RFC - 48

Nelson RFC - 12

ABERGAVENNY made no mistake in firmly laying to rest the error-littered performance of last week with a dynamic display of running rugby that left Nelson clutching at straws.

In a punchy and powerhouse outing, Aber have now rocketed back to the top of the Division Three East tree.

It did however take the Bailey Park Bigade the opening 20 minutes to settle and gain their composure as they fell 3-7 behind.

They then took the game by the horns with a try from scrum half James Harris who had only to put pressure on the ball after the pack had driven Nelson over from a five yard scrum.

Then two tries in quick succession from outside centre Huw Williams emphasised a good partnership between him and Stuart Davies at inside centre.

Each try was similar with Davies breaking the first tackle drawing remaining defenders and then offloading to Williams to score each near the posts.

Both tries were converted by Danny Haymond to give Aber a healthy lead of 24-7 at the interval.

The best individual try of the match and the one which clinched the bonus point came from winger Tom Macpherson who from 45 yards skinned five defenders with a combination of side steps and hand offs to score with a flourish leaving would be tacklers littering the field in his wake.

Rugby can be fickle and three minutes later Macpherson missed a tackle allowing the Nelson winger to score and make it 29-12.

Man of the match Macpherson soon recovered his hero status two minutes later when quick handling between backs and forwards saw second row Lee Oakley surge free to release Macpherson steaming up on his outside for the score.

The forwards now had Nelsons' pack where they wanted them and dominated in the tight and loose.

The pressure from the homeside was now relentless and fresh legs were brought on with substitutions.

Nelson were stretched from wing to wing through phases before wing Ian Davies scored in the corner followed by a fine conversion from Haymond.

The best team try was reserved for last. With Nelson now broken Aber were running from everywhere. MacPherson began a dash from his own five yard line and fed scrum half Lewis Evans creating a three on two situation.

The players kept their heads and passed between them Barbarian style to return the ball to Evans who scored under the posts.

Abergavenny are on the road again next week with a trip up top to tackle Blaina.

The Quins, who remain unbeaten this season, were also at home on Saturday where they defeated Division Six East side Beaufort 21-12.
