Treherbet - 10

Abergavenny - 26

AFTER a disappointing start to their season in Division Two East which has seen them narrowly miss out in their last two matches by single scores, Aber finally recorded a crucial first win on Saturday away to Treherbet.

This timely victory could not have come at a better time for the claret and ambers who will benefit from both the win and the way in which they won it, when they face top of the table Llantrisant at Bailey Park this Saturday.

Speaking briefly from his Majorca base, whilst taking a break from scouting for new recruits to the Abergavenny cause, coach Gary Lawrence told the Chronicle, "Although there were still errors, it was a good all-round team performance.

"Treherbet are currently at the bottom of the table, and if we had been a little bit more clinical I think we could have put 40 points on them, but at the end of the day it was our first win of the season, and a bonus win at that. So we have to remain optimistic, and look to build on what was a very solid performance if we plan on sticking around for the duration."

In a game which saw three tries by Stuart Davies, one by Yam Lotze, and three successful conversions by Steve Lang, Aber never really gave Treherbet a look-in, and ran-out comfortable winners.

Lawrence added, "We made some very good plays on the day. Our counter-attacking was very good, and our back three performed really well.

"However, for me, Stuart Davies stood out as man of the match for the full 80 minutes. Not just because of the tries, but for the heart he put into his overall performance. He was all over the field and his tackling was exceptional."

Although Lawrence will miss next Saturday's testing encounter against a well-oiled Llantrisant outfit, he remains confident that Abergavenny can more than hold their own judging on their performances to date, and said, "We may have lost our first three games, but it was more down to errors on our behalf, rather than the other team overwhelming us. Apart from those unnecessary mistakes our performances have been good.

"I'm positive forwards coach Gareth Taylor will be working the lads hard this week ahead of the game, and I think if we cut out the errors, play to our strengths, and use the added advantage of playing on our own turf, we can give Llantrisant a good run for their money."

The big game kicks-off at Bailey Park this Saturday with a 2.30pm kick-off.
