Abergavenny-based Longtown Mountain Rescue team were called out on Sunday afternoon to tend to an injured walker on the Skirrid (Ysgyryd Fawr) mountain.

Gwent Police alerted the team at 1.30pm after a 49-year-old woman from Bristol, who had been part of a walking group, was reported to have slipped and suffered lower leg injuries, leaving her unable to move and stranded at approximately 1,200ft up on the north-western side of the mountain.

After a search in heavy rain and high winds the rescue team located the woman and her companions. She was treated on the scene by team medics then taken by stretcher down to a roadside ambulance and on to Nevill Hall Hospital.

Luke Lewis, team leader of Longtown MRT said, “They did exactly the right thing and the woman and her friends were well equipped to shelter from the elements until we arrived.

“I’d like to pay tribute to the professionalism of team members who turn out at all times and in all weathers to help the lost and injured.

“We were glad to help and wish her a speedy recovery.”
