THE Welsh Junior Badminton championships took place at Deeside LC recently and the Abergavenny youngsters were out in force.

At U11 level Abergavenny took all available titles. Oliver Stansfield retained the singles and the doubles with Elliot Simmonds and won the mixed with Lucie Whiteman (sister of his partner last year.)

In the girls singles event Abergavenny's Aimie Whiteman defeated Bethany Jones (Abergavenny). She then teamed up with her twin sister Lucie to beat Bethany Jones and Lydia Morris (Abergavenny) in one of the closest finals of the day.

Aimie and Elliot Simmonds were then runners up to Lucie and Oliver in the mixed final.

With the Whiteman twins( four titles between them) and Lydia Morris available for several more years at U11, the future is bright.

At U13 Level Tomos Whiteman was seeking to retain the three titles he won last year. Whiteman underlined his class by taking all three titles for a second year defeating North Wales young star Andrew Oates in the singles in two straight sets, plus the doubles with James Morris(Abergavenny) and with sister Kate in the mixed.

With the twin sisters taking two events each, and brother Tom taking three, it was down to Kate Whiteman to see what she could do.

In the singles final she faced fellow international Amy Jukes(North Wales) who is a year older and defeated her last time they met.

Whiteman was not to be denied however and saved six set points in the second set to win the singles crown.

Whiteman then teamed up with Amy Jukes to take the doubles before going for the hat-trick with Tom against Oates and Jukes plus fellow internationals Druv Bansal and Rhea Hemmadi. The young Abergavenny pair were not to be denied and won the title, defeating in two sets both strong international pairs.

At U15 level Kate won her fourth title winning the girls doubles with Gean Sou Mo (South Glam) after defeating number one seeds Sophie Arrighi (South Glam) and Kelly Saunders (Gwent).

James Ellaway reached the final of the doubles with Scott Oates (North Wales) and the semi-final of the mixed.

Josh Pearce together with Morgan and Evan Williams all played well.

At U17 Callum Simmonds and Josh Pearce showed how much they have improved by losing closely to U15 finalists James and Scott.

With Megan Pritchard (U13 GS) and Lydia Morris(U11 GS) winning plate competitions, Abergavenny finished up with 16 titles, six finalists and two plate winners.

A truly amazing statistic for any club.
