WHEN he’s not cleaning windows, Mark Vaz likes nothing better than running a lot of marathons. 400 in 365 days to be precise. At least that’s the target the man from Penkridge has set himself.

And after completing marathon 201 on day 191 in Crickhowell last Sunday, it looks like Vas his well on the way to breaking records and busting blisters.

No-one’s ever run 400 marathons in 365 days before. And why would they? It’s not something on most people’s bucket lists, but Vaz is a tenacious type who loves to run. Which is just as well, because if he succeeds in his challenge, it’ll entail him running 10,488 miles. Which to put in context, is roughly the same distance as flying from London to Sydney. And that’s a lot of ground to cover.

Yet judging by Vaz’s performance in Crickhowell on the weekend, the rampant runner is very much on the rampage and determined to cross the finishing line.

Vaz set off for marathon 201 from Crickhowell High School, and run an 18 mile leg with support and company from members of Bryn Bach Running Club and Crickhowell Running Club.

Julie Cashell is a member of the homegrown contingent who put in the hard yards with Vaz and explained, “I run for Bryn Bach Running Club and am friends with Steve Carter from the Crickhowell Running Club.

“Bryn Bach are over 100 members and involved in lots of things but Crickhowell are only a small club, so Steve, who is very impressed with what Mark Vaz is doing, approached us to see if we would lend our support.

“Of course we said yes, because it really is amazing what he (Mark Vaz) is doing.”

The current record for marathons run in one year currently stands at 239. The 32-year-old Vaz is well on his way to smashing that, but has described his athletic odyssey which began way back in July of last year as an emotional roller coaster, but the man who is on track to become the most famous window cleaner since George Formby, admits when his feet are pounding the pavements it’s all good because, “I love it.”

Vaz, who was adopted as a child, is raising money for Adoption UK. You can support Vaz in his efforts by visiting his Just Giving page - 400 marathons in one year.
