THERE were mixed fortunes for Usk on Saturday as the first Team won comfortably against Pontypridd, but the seconds suffering a reverse against the same opponents. On a glorious summer's day at the Athletic Club Ground Pontypridd won the toss and elected to bat. The visitors lost wickets regularly and never put together a meaningful partnership. They were dismissed for 219 in the 48th over. Josh Waughington top scoring with 74, while Lorne Burns (4-29) and James Colthard (3-64) were the pick of the Usk bowlers. Ponty's total never looked enough as Usk's reply began with 53 from the first five overs. Openers Sam Morris (56) and Iain Clayton (75) put on 117 for the first wicket. Indeed, Morris' 50 was reached from just 28 balls, with Clayton taking only 47 balls for his. Despite both Morris and Clayton falling in the 17th over, Burns (54* from 41 balls) completed a fine all-round display by guiding the hosts home in the 28th over, finishing the match with a six. Usk finished on 222-3. It was not such a happy outcome for the seconds over at Pontypridd; their first outing of the season. The hosts made 255-4 from their 50 overs. Gregor McKain (100*) and Liam Stacey (94) scoring the bulk of the runs, while Paul Knight finished with the respectable figures of 2-34. Usk never got near Pontypridd's total as they were bowled out for 165, Matt Cook (85*) holding Usk's innings together. Ross Skellett finished with figures of 4-27. This Saturday the firsts will hope to maintain their 100% league record as they travel to Penarth. The second team meanwhile will look for their first league win as they entertain the sae opponents. Both games begin at 1pm. On Sunday, the third XI host Penydarren in a friendly, with play starting at 2pm. On Monday the firsts will return to action at home to Blackwood. Play begins at 1pm.
