THERE was plenty of fun and frolics as the traders of Abergavenny got on their bikes and rode in front of hundreds of well-wishers on Friday night in the annual Carnival and Traders Races around the town centre. The competitions are part of the Welsh Open Circuit Races and saw many revellers take to the streets on their two wheels dressed in all kinds of whacky get-ups. From party dresses to many other costumes, the business folk of the town had a ball, with the best of them all being a chariot pulled by a bike which just about made it over the line before collapsing in a heap on Baker Street. The winner of the race was Richard Maund who was dressed from head to toe in an all-blue 'onsey' that even covered his head. But, after winning, he said, "I had to take the mask off because I could not breath. It was all good fun and I enjoyed it." Steve Theaker was first over the line in the Traders Race while, also in the Carnival Race, Fiona and Nigel Bevan won the Best Dressed prize for that chariot. Nigel was riding the bike while Fiona was whipping the bike. It was all going very well until Fiona took a step too close to the front of the chariot and it fell apart to the hoots of laughter from the fantastic crowd.
