THIS week ladies and gentlemen we find ourselves on the testing ground of the oche. The toe line or the throw line where many a dream of glory is realised for those with nerves of steel and hands as still as a mill pond.

Llanfoist lad Cyril Rogers knows all about throwing arrows. He’s pictured here with the rest of the dart-playing bruisers that were the Abergavenny Labour Club team of 1950 who went on to win the Great George Winners League and Town Champions Cup.

Cyril wasn’t just a talented thrower of the tungstens, he also enjoyed plenty of success on the iron horse and has a host of motorbike scrambling titles to his name.

The Llanfoist lad was also pretty handy in the boxing ring, and it’s just as well because after leaving school at 12 he was working on the farm to earn his daily bread.

Not that Cyril was afraid of hard work he later went on to build his own bungalow in Llanfoist where he still lives.

Still fit and a fiddle and game for a challenge, the 90-year-old told the Chronicle, “I had a great time playing darts with some of the boys in this picture such as Jack Rogers, Dai Warner, Reg Strong, Cyril Atkey, and Mr Hamer.

“It was a great social scene with a great bunch of lads. Looking at these old photos brings it all flooding back. The years really do pass in a blink of an eye, so enjoy it while you can is my motto.”

Featured in the second picture are Cyril Rogers, Sid Jones, Mr Jackson, and Jack Rogers.
