Abergavenny Ladies - 1

Cwmtawe Ladies – 3

ABERGAVENNY ladies played their first league match of 2012 last Saturday but unfortunately the score did not reflect the effort put in by the team.

Abergavenny returned to the fray with newly appointed Captain Bethan Cook and Vice-Captain Charlie-Ann Haydock, and entered Saturday's match against Cwmtawe Ladies with optimism and a great team spirit.

Andrea Carter stepped up and played brilliantly in goals and three junior players who are progressing well in the ladies team, put in a strong performance, playing in forward and mid-positions.

The team also benefitted from the addition of two new promising players.

However, try as they might, Aber couldn't stop Cwmtawe going 0-2 up in the first-half through a goal and a penalty,

However, after being awarded a short corner, Abergavenny Ladies were able to add their own name to the scoreboard.

An excellent sweep in by Sharon Phillips allowed right winger Becky Pass to make a fantastic shot into the back of the goal, restoring the ladies' confidence and spirit.

Yet it was just not to be Aber's day, and in the second-half Cwmtawe struck again and scored their third goal.

From then on in, Cwmtawe put up a strong defence and Abergavenny were unlucky not to score.

A sterling performance from centre mid player Sharon Phillips saw her awarded man of the match, and despite the defeat, the whole team played well together; displaying great passes and skill with the ball, with particularly strong play from defence players Kate Awmack and Bethan Cook,

Aber must now remain optimistic and look to translate their performance into goals for the remainder of the season.
