A BASEMENT battling Blaenavon Blues secured their first win since October after beating Lliswerry 5-3 at the Memorial ground in a midweek fixture.

Following an early goal from the visitors, Brad Jones equalised, then a superb hat trick from midfielder Jamie Brankley put the Blues in full control.

Lee Challenger sealed the victory with a late strike, which was a deserved reward for his industrious evening's work.

On Saturday the Blues travelled to near neighbours Fairfield United and quickly found themselves two goals down.

A stirring second half comeback saw Josh Bull score two fine goals although unfortunately the ref only allowed one strike to stand and sadly for the Blues it looks like relegation is now a reality.

Elsewhere, the Blues reserves scored two goals in the last four minutes of their Open Cup semi-final against Pandy to take the tie into extra time. Marc Browning and Illtyd Caddick were the marksmen.

With no-one netting in extra time, the Blues now go through to the final after winning the penalty shoot out 5-4.

Back in Gwent County Division One, Govilon received a 0-4 thumping at home courtesy of Albion Rovers.

Meanwhile in Gwent County Division Two, the Mardy keeping proving their doubters wrong and delivering the goods with a fine 4-3 victory over Lucas Cwmbran to ensure they stay safely away from life in Gwent County Division Three.
