ABERGAVENNY Squash Club’s ‘D’ team came up with an impressive performance against a Monmouth ‘C’ side who will almost certainly be promoted at the end of the season, winning by three matches to two. The match turned on the team captain’s performance, as Mark Nicholls won in five close sets, having been 2-0 down at one stage. He was ably assisted by both Rob Phillips and Gary Hortop, who had comfortable victories. The team remain on course for a third place finish.

The ‘E’ team travelled to Monmouth to play the bottom side, and did win the match by 3-2 with only four players. However, as the player missing was its number one, Chris Owen, who unfortunately was incommunicado, league rules meant that the side would be deducted all of its 13 points for the match. As a result, the team drop into fifth place, but there is strong chance that they can get back into fourth place by the end of the season.

On the same night, the ‘C’ team played host to a Cardiff side just above it in the league for a crunch match, and proceeded to produce an impressive performance, winning by four matches to one. Matthew Thomas and Mike Logan won comfortably, with both Chris Phelps and Mathew Pomfret winning in five sets, and Mitchell Lawrence only just losing 3-2. As a result, the team have reached the heady heights of fourth place, but there is still much to play for, as only nine points separate third from sixth, which is one of the relegation spots!

The ‘A’ team made the reverse journey to Cardiff, and squeezed out an important 3-2 win to maintain its push for the title even though it was missing its number one player. Anthony Squire came into the side for his first ever match, and, although losing in straight sets, performed very creditably, taking his opponent to the wire in each set.
