Abergavenny Squash Club’s ‘C’ team started a busy week with a comprehensive win over bottom side Newport ‘E’ by five matches to nil. Chris Phelps had to fight hard to win 3-2, but the remaining matches were won comfortably. The team is starting to climb the table.

On the same night, the ‘B’ team also started a busy week by travelling to Cardiff to play the league leaders. To their credit, they performed well, just losing 3-2. Captain Gary Lawrence led from the front, and he was ably supported by Gareth Hughes-Jones. However, the team remain in seventh place, and with only three matches left to play, relegation beckons.

The ‘E’ team visited Monmouth, and managed a win by three matches to two. Both Gary Hortop and Tony Davies did well, but the match hinged upon Simon Cave’s performance, and he did not disappoint, coming from two nil down to win in five sets. The team remain in fourth place; this is turning out to be a good season for the side.

The ‘D’ team entertained bottom side Monmouth ‘E’ and won easily 5-0. Tony Davies had to work hard, coming from 2-1 down to win 3-2, but the other members of the team were not stretched. The team consolidate their position in third place.

The ‘C’ team also played its second match of the week, and achieved an important victory against University of South Wales ‘A’, winning handsomely by four matches to one. Matthew Thomas set the tone by beating an opponent to whom he has always lost, and this carried across the team, with David Sutherland coming back from two sets down to win 3-2. As a result, the team has gotten clear of the relegation zone, and is now in fourth place. This is a great achievement, but there is still much to do before the end of the season!

The ‘B’ team visited The Vale by Llanishen, and were well beaten 5-0. Only Anthony Squire managed to take his match to five sets, but mention must be made of Ellis Lawrence, who managed to obtain a point even with his ankle injury. The team remain deep in the relegation zone.

The ‘A’ team travelled to Rhiwbina, and lost its second match in a row, losing 4-1. The team was missing its top player, Roshan Barros, and Jethro Binns tweaked his hamstring in the first set of his match. Only Steve Williams managed a win, and the team drop into second place, just eight points behind the leaders. However, there is still much optimism in the camp that a title is still achievable!
