ABERGAVENNY Squash Club's 'C' team commenced their new season with a difficult match against Bedwelty 'A', who were playing their 'B' team last autumn. The older and wiser heads of newcomer Peter Steed and Jiwan Singh prevailed in their matches, with Singh winning a very tight match 17-16 in the fifth set. Mitchell Lawrence was just pipped at the post, having led by two sets to love. However, this was a creditable start in what could well be a difficult campaign.

Tim Woodier (1) lost 3-0;

Peter Steed (2) won 3-1;

Mitchell Lawrence (3) lost 3-2;

Jiwan Singh (4) won 3-1;

Matthew Thomas (5) lost 3-0.

And so it proved in their next game to league leaders Calidcot 'B' who beat them 4-1. The only bright light was Chris Owen's performance in winning 3-1. Peter Steed came very close, only losing the last set 17-16. It looks like being a difficult spring for the newly promoted 'C' team, who are going to have to work hard to stay in this division.

Tim Woodier (1) lost 3-2;

Peter Steed (2) lost 3-2;

Mitchell Lawrence (3) lost 3-0;

Simon Cave (4) lost 3-0;

Chris Owen (5) won 3-1.

The 'B' team commenced battle for the new season with a three matches to two win over Llanishen 'A', a creditable result. Gary Lawrence won again, so his record to date stands at 14-1, and he was ably supported by Chris Phelps and Karl Whiteman, who both had comfortable wins.

Mike Logan (1) lost 3-2;

Gary Lawrence (2) won 3-2;

Chris Phelps (3) won 3-0;

Ellis Lawrence (4) lost 3-1;

Karl Whiteman (5) won 3-1.

The "B' team won again against Cardiff Vets, but it was a very close match. What was pleasing for the team was that different people stood up and were counted - Ellis Lawrence managed his first win following his return from an ankle injury.  The ever present Karl Whiteman now has an 11-1 record!  Two matches have brought two wins, a great start to the new season.

A super performance by the 'A' team, saw them beat league leaders Swansea 'A' by three matches to two. Both Lewys Hurst and Chris Hill won very comfortably, and were ably supported by Steve Williams, who managed to win for only the third time this season. The team are currently fourth overall.
