LAST weekend saw the start of the 2018/19 hockey season for both Abergavenny’s senior and junior sides.

Both ladies’ sides started their campaigns at home and both took their first victories of the season. The mens’ side travelled away to Gloucester where they were set back by an early injury, giving the home side the upper hand.

On Sunday, Abergavenny’s youngest members (Under 9s) took to the field in Brecon. With only three training sessions behind them, the newly formed team took to the pitch with much enthusiasm and energy and won their first game comfortably. With a total of seven matches to play, the under 9s began to settle into the game, think about their positions and work together.

Some great tackles from Abergavenny’s defence were preventing teams getting over the half-way line, allowing Abergavenny’s forwards to put lots of pressure on the opposition. This pressure quickly amounted into well worked team goals. However, on occasions Abergavenny’s goal keeper was also put through his paces but reacted brilliantly and made some great saves.

The under 9s ended the tournament winning four games, drawing two and losing just one. They scored a huge total of 15 goals and only conceding four.

The club would like to say a big thank you to the parents and carers who travelled to Brecon.

Whether you are new to the sport, have played before or are just looking for a new challenge, why not pop along and join the club on the hockey pitch this season. You can find more details at abergavennyhockey.co.uk or @abergavennyhockey on Facebook or Instagram.
