LAST year Raglan Parc golf club seniors won the South Wales Classic Plate and this year they have reached the final of the main tournament with a close semi-final match.

Ironically the match was against Neath, the team they beat in last year's final, and the two sides only had minor changes from those that faced each other last year.

Some excellent play from the winners ensured that Neath were not able to gain revenge for last year's defeat and the match result of two matches to one was also the same as last year. Congratulations go to the two winning pairs of Wyndham Tranter and Alan Bridges, and Gary French and Colin Guyton.

Non-playing skipper and team organiser Ray York was of course very pleased with the result and is now looking forward to the final against Cradoc at The Grove on Tuesday, September 4.

Also last week, 51 seniors turned out for the Inter-District Tournament with teams from Raglan, Usk, Dragons, Monmouth and the Barbarians competing.

Amid much banter and in a close contest, Monmouth managed to secure victory. Many thanks must go to Des Williams who organised the competition and the convivial meal afterwards.

Des commented, "Trying to organise 51 people who sometimes have short term memory lapses is always a challenge but thanks to the team captains and the cooperation of all involved things went pretty well".

On Thursday last, Raglan seniors unfortunately lost their latest friendly match away at Forest Hills by five matches to three.

Captain Stuart Bradley was not too disheartened as he acknowledged that Forest Hills are always a difficult side to beat particularly on their home turf.

Wins were secured by Ron Thomas and Mike Williams and Ian Bowen and Geoff Maynard. The other point was gained from halved matches by Richard Phillips and Jim True and Neil Sansom and Don Parsons.
