Llangorse Sailing Club is riding the crest of a wave after coming runner-up in the Royal Yachting Association's National Club of the Year competition.

Commodore Colin Fletcher explained, "As a totally voluntary, low cost club, it has been a major achievement to win this award. Of course it makes us Wales' number one sailing club!

"The award recognises how the club has grown, and how we've become a centre of excellence of our sport, not only in this area, but our positive reputation has spread UK wide.

"Our facilities have improved, membership has grown, training of adults and children has expanded, and we're providing beginners, recreational sailors, and elite competitors with a great place to carry out one of Britain's most successful Olympic sports"

Fletcher added, "A new clubhouse has been constructed and will be open for the 2015 season which begins this month. In addition to serving all of our practical needs, we have created a training centre which features state-of the-art training facilities and equipment.

"The new clubhouse is a physical reflection of how far the club has come in recent years. Last year we saw more people on-the-water than ever before and our youth section has seen Llangorse' youngsters winning trophies from major competitions. Events such as our Open Day for the public and our Disability Fun Day, run in partnership with the local authority, have attracted new members, and families young and old. From the 2014 season we have eleven sailors under 16, going forward to regional and national training squads.

"The award presents a special message to the community here at Llangorse, that we have something very special, and to our members it reflects their commitment in supporting the club and its activities in so many ways. As Commodore I am truly proud."

This year the club are eager to welcome new members and equally keen to see newcomers to the sport. If you're interested why not pop along or visit the club's website, http://www.llangorsesailing.com">www.llangorsesailing.com.
