LAST Saturday Abergavenny played their final game of the MBA season against Newport Athletic at Avenue Road.

Needing to score two points to be sure of retaining their place in Division Two, Abergavenny won on two rinks to gain the overall victory by 95 shots to 73, scoring ten league points.

This victory was only achieved by the team showing great strength of character over the final three ends of the game when Newport Athletic were in the ascendancy. They amassed a total of 30 shots and conceded only six in this phase to overturn a deficit and win the game.

The rinks of Matthew Vale and Keith Richards both had comfortable victories, winning by 27 shots to 14 and 29 shots to 14 respectively. Ieuan Jenkins rink was defeated narrowly, losing by 21 shots to 20 and Gethin Hill fought back to reduce an eleven shot deficit to lose by 24 shots to 19.

Last week the GBL team visited Belle Vue Park for a league game. They could only manage to draw on one rink. Losing on the other two rinks they were defeated by 71 shots to 41.

The most successful rink was that of John Marsh. Although they were ten shots behind with five ends to play they managed to score ten shots, without reply, to draw the game 20 shots all. The rink of Gareth Jones held a two shot lead after ten ends. The Belle Vue rink then took control, taking a nine shot lead. Despite a late effort by the Abergavenny rink they could not totally reduce their deficit and lost by 18 shots to 16. Derek Bailey's rink could not get into their game which allowed the Belle Vue rink to gain control and go on to win by 33 shots to five.
