Crickhowell RFC - 27

Trinant RFC 37

THERE were points galore when Crickhowell met Trinant, unfortunately for the Parc Broyd outfit the game ended with the visitors claiming the lion’s share of them.

The visitors were first on the scoreboard when they slotted over a penalty awarded from Crick’s kick-off.

Play resumed and player-coach Gareth Bowen emulated Welsh scrum-half Gareth Davies’ try against Scotland when he intercepted a loose pass and sprinted upfield to touch down for a converted try.

The well-drilled visitors struck back with a brace of tries, one of which was converted. The home team closed the gap slightly with a penalty but Trinant stretched their lead just before half-time with another unconverted try leaving it 10-20 at the break.

Early in the second-half Trinant got their bonus point try after exerting pressure on the Crickhowell line.

With the gap between the scores widening, Crickhowell dug deep. With good forward work securing the ball it was passed out to winger Josh Cashell. The speedy youngster made his way downfield eluding tacklers and, moving infield, he passed to Keanu Morris who finished off the move by scoring a well-deserved try.

Trinant soon recovered the points however, with another unconverted try, taking the scoreline to 15-32. With something of a hill to climb, Crickhowell stuck to their guns and their efforts were rewarded when captain Matt Botting made a break in midfield, broke one tackle and passed inside to winger Bleddyn Carrington in close support who secured the try.

An exciting finish was in prospect when shortly afterwards Matthew Watkins scored a try, earning Crick a bonus point.

With just another converted try needed to win it for Crickhowell, their hopes were dashed when Trinant broke free just before the final whistle and added another five points, denying Crickhowell a losing-bonus point.

The match-ball was sponsored by ex-player Garie Dix of Crickhowell Tyres. The club’s next fixture will be on March 3, when they will travel to Tredegar RFC.
