THERE’S no shortage of Brylcreem this week folks as we head back to the 1950s and spend some time with the lads from the Elvis Presley Appreciation Society.

Only joking. It’s the Grofield Secondary Modern Rugby Team from 1956. During that iconic year these fresh faced youngsters were ruck n’ mauling when the King was rock n’ rolling with his freshly released debut album and telling us all about the bellhop’s tears and desk clerk all dressed in black at the Heartbreak Hotel.

Of course nowadays Grofield Secondary Modern is known as Catnref Primary but back in 1956 it was home to a different kind of cat.

One such mover and groover was Tom Dodd, pictured far right in the middle row.

Tom supplied the Chronicle with the picture and explained, “It seems so long ago now and I struggle to remember a lot of the lads by name. I know that situated in the middle row, far left, is Des Norton who went on to become a very good goalkeeper for the Abergavenny Thursdays. Next to him is a teacher called Gwyn Walbyoff. Holding the ball in the middle is Des Davies. Next to him is Head Teacher Mr Pitt, and next to me is a teacher called Don Prosser who played on the wing for Pontypool, and I believe he once played against the All Blacks.”
