Beaufort RFC - 27
Crickhowell RFC - 31
THE penultimate game of their season saw Crickhowell travel up to take on bottom-of-the-table Beaufort RFC on a fine Bank Holiday Saturday.
The visitors were first on the scoreboard when a kick ahead by the home team was gathered by Gary Davies and resulted in a fine individual try underneath the posts with Tom Keane converting.
Beaufort struck back soon afterwards with a well-taken long-distance penalty.
Crickhowell responded by scoring another try when the speedy and elusive Harry Summers outfoxed his opponent and glided over the line, Keane again converting.
Beaufort rallied and applied pressure near Crickhowell’s line and after a series of infringements at the scrum, were rewarded with a penalty try.
It was again Gary Davies who stretched Crick’s lead when he spotted a gap and darted through under the posts to score his second try with the on-form Keane converting yet again.
Not to be outdone, however, Beaufort once again fought back and gained their second, unconverted, try leaving the score at the break at 15-21 in favour of the visitors.
At the beginning of the second-half the boot of Tom Keane added another three points from a penalty. The Beaufort forwards were causing problems for Crickhowell all game with their efficient clearing-out and ball retention at the rucks. In an attempt to gain ground Crick kicked ahead. The ball was fumbled and the bounce eluded a defender and it was Nick Dixon who capitalised by reaching the ball first, kicking ahead and gathering to score against the run of play. Keane once again added the extra points.
Beaufort continued their stalwart efforts, however, and gained another try shortly before the final whistle to win the game.
Crickhowell’s popular Summer Touch rugby resumes on Thursday, May 17 at 7pm on the Parc Broyd pitch. The sessions are free and open to all ages and abilities.
