Crickhowell RFC - 17
Brynithel RFC - 27
CRICKHOWELL’S WRU Bowl fixture with the troubled Tredegar RFC had to be cancelled so a hastily arranged away friendly against fellow League 3EC team Brynithel RFC was played in its stead.
Crickhowell were quick off the mark and stunned their rivals with a burst of three tries, one of which was converted, in the first 20 minutes.
The always reliable Nick Dixon scored a brace and the speedy Harry Summers crossed the line for the other with scrum-half Richard Roberts converting.
In a game of rolling substitutions, Brynithel had a larger pool of players on which to call and some hasty changes followed. Shortly before half-time they scored an unconverted try of their own to make it 5-17.
The second-half belonged to Brynithel with their pack dominating the scrums and their speedy backs causing problems. Crick’s defence was resolute and many attacks by the Valleys side were thwarted. Brynithel’s determination, however, won the day and the match when they scored a further three tries and topped the win with a penalty leaving the final score at 27-17.
In their first game of the season against West Mon RFC, Crick were unlucky to be pipped at the post. Crick had built up a commanding lead of 33 points to 14 but West Mon pulled back to make the score 28-33. Then in the final minute West Mon levelled the score after exerting pressure on the line. The conversion was missed but before Crick could celebrate the win, the referee controversially allowed the kick to be taken again and this time it crossed the bar.
With several injuries hampering the team, Crickhowell are still actively recruiting.
In other news, from the club, a mini/junior section is now holding sessions on a Tuesday evening at 6pm and Crick’s next game is another away fixture versus Trinant RFC on Saturday, October 22.
Quins - 22
Hartridge HSOB - 0
FOLLOWING Bedwas Seconds failure to field a side for their League game against Abergavenny Quins, the home side were extremely grateful that at the twelfth hour Hartridge HSOB agreed to step in.
Quins fielded a young side which included a few of the older Youth players. Nathan Williams, Will Robinson and Ben Morganand all played well and were well led by number eight Joe Symonds who added a huge level of experience to the home pack.
Josh Parr put in another sound game at fullback as he regains full match fitness following a lengthy absence due to an injury sustained last season.
His fielding of the high ball was faultless and his kicking out of hand always gains huge distance while he rounded off a fine individual performance with two of the four tries in the 22-0 win. The others came from Garin Price and Dan Cox.
