Crickhowell RFC - 22

Whiteheads RFC - 19

CRICKHOWELL RFC played their first pre-season friendly at Parc Broyd against last year’s league winners - Whiteheads RFC.

The game was played in four 20 minute periods to give all available players a run-out under the dual-captaincy of Gareth Downey and Ryan James.

The visitors were well-drilled and their strong scrummaging initially caused problems. Their strong forward drive and subsequent accurate kick secured the first converted try of the day. Crickhowell upped their game and replied shortly afterwards when Toby Purvis crossed the line and converted his own try.

The second quarter saw plenty of action with Crick stretching their lead. Scrum-half Richard Roberts secured their second try, followed shortly afterwards by another from Ryan James. Whiteheads fought back to secure another short-range try. The third quarter saw the Bassaleg side regain the lead with a fine converted try well-worked from the half-way line.

The final quarter saw Toby Purvis make a break through the defence and pass to Zach Mills who touched down. Whiteheads were unlucky when they again crossed the line and seemed sure to gain victory only for it to be disallowed

Coaches Jim Aylett and Gareth Bowen were pleased with their team’s effort.

Bowen said, “We defended like warriors and attacked with real purpose and flair.”
