Pontllanfraith RFC - 15
Crickhowell RFC - 14
FOR their last league game of the season Crickhowell headed to Pontllanfraith looking to secure third place in Division Three East C.
The first half saw play swing back and forth with Pontllanfraith denying their visitors a great deal of possession. The home team were well-drilled at the scrum and clearing out at the breakdown but a stout defensive effort kept them away from the try-line. The only score of the first half was a Pontllanfraith penalty shortly before the break.
Not long after the restart the home team were camped on the Crickhowell try-line and their persistence was rewarded with a converted try. They stretched their lead further with another similar try later in the half leaving the boys from Parc Broyd trailing by 15 points to nil.
With ten minutes to go, Crick finally managed to score a try of their own with a well-worked passage of play which saw the ball travel from touchline to touchline with John Jones speeding over and grounding between the posts.
With about two minutes left on the clock Matt Botting burst through with Tom Keane’s conversion bringing them to within one point. It was too little, too late however, as the time ran out, much to the delight of the Pontllanfraith faithful, it being only their second win of the season. Crick ended up with fourth place in the league.
On the evening of Friday, April 26. Crick take on West Mon RFC at Pontypool United’s ground in the final of the Ivor Jones Cup. kick-off is at 7pm.
Crick’s coach, Gareth Bowen, is bidding farewell to the Crickhowell RFC after the season ends so the club is looking to recruit someone to enhance their existing coaching team at all levels for the 2019/20 season, hopefully to commence on July 19.
They are keen to speak to anyone who may be interested. So, if you, or someone you know is interested, please contact the club on 07817648359 or via e-mail at [email protected].
