Crickhowell RFC - 16
West Mon RFC - 27
LIFE in a higher league is proving to be a tough ask for Crickhowell who have only won one out of four matches to date this season.
On September 23 they lost to Malpas RFC 35-13. Crick’s points came from a try by Ed Jones and a conversion and two penalties from the boot of outside-half Tom Keane.
On Saturday they hosted West Mon RFC who took the lead with a converted try after 15 minutes. The ball had been secured at a line-out, fed across field and strong forward work led to the score.
On the half-hour mark the visitors struck again with a similar, but this time unconverted, try. Although facing a larger pack the Crickhowell forwards held their own. Indiscipline by West Mon led to three penalties for the Parc Broyd team, two of which were slotted over by Tom Keane with one unluckily hitting the post leaving the half time score at 6-12.
Crick took the lead after they were first to score in the second half when strong work by scrum-half Richard Roberts led to a try converted by Keane.
A successful penalty by West Mon saw them once again in front, but the increasingly accurate kicking of Keane slotted over another penalty.
West Mon managed to gain another unconverted try and, with time running out, secured their bonus point win when an unnoticed forward pass led to them breaking free and scoring a final converted try underneath the posts.
The game was marred towards the end when Ed Jones was forced to leave the field with a nasty eye injury following a series of punches at a maul, sadly missed by the referee.
On Saturday, Crickhowell begin their defence of the Ivor Jones Cup when they travel up to take on Forgeside in a preliminary round of the competition.
The club would like to thank match sponsors Rob Clarke and Richard Reardon-Smith.
On Saturday the club also revealed its new strip for the season.
