Crickhowell RFC - 17

Beaufort RFC - 5

The first round of the WRU Bowl competition saw Crickhowell take on Beaufort RFC at Parc Broyd and deliver the goods in what turned out to be an eventual much.

Despite a heavy penalty count going against them, and at one stage being down to 14 men, Crickhowell managed to withstand the Beaufort attacks until the very last minute of the first half when, following another penalty, Beaufort managed to cross the line but failed to convert.

In the second half Crickhowell began their fight back with a penalty for not releasing calmly slotted over by an on-form Leon Rees.

A short while later a swift kick ahead enabled the ever-alert Lewis Logan to pick up the ball and power over near the posts. Leon Rees was successful with the conversion.

Beaufort then began to attempt to rectify the scoreline but stout defensive work by Crickhowell foiled their efforts. Frustrations boiled over at one point leading to the sidelining of players from both teams.

Undeterred, Crickhowell stuck to their task and another kick ahead left Beaufort in disarray. Matt Botting seized the opportunity, put in a further kick ahead and won the race to the ball, gathered cleanly, and dived over under the posts. Rees again converted to give Crickhowell a 17-5 victory.

The game was sponsored by the Coach and Horses, Llangynidr. Man of the match was a dual award to Ryan James and Lewis Logan. All players worked hard and put in a full shift and special mention must be made of the sterling work put in by the front row of Kenny Birch, Jake Powell-Thomas and Andy Nicholls.

Next Saturday sees a return to League fixtures when Crickhowell travel to Abertillery to take on Old Tyleryans.
