TWO Abergavenny youngsters turned out for professional academy sides on Saturday and both enjoyed wins in wet and windy conditions.

Monmouth School for Boys’ Shay Lewis joined four of his schoolmates - Freddy Harding, Barney Thomas-Hewartson, Tom Horan and Aidan Boshoff in the Dragons Academy U18s side that stormed to a 38-12 six-try win over Bristol Bears at North Bristol.

And former Abergavenny RFC junior Oli Smith, who is a student at Hartpury College, also shone on the wing in Worcester Warriors’ 24-14 win away to Wasps.

Tom Horan scored the third try for Dragons after the break, following two first-half efforts by wing Will Rees, with Ioan Duggan, Aidan Boshoff and Gethyn Cannon adding three more.

The game was good preparation for the Welsh side as they head into the Regional Age Grade Championship later this month, with Ospreys visiting the Centre of Excellence in Ystrad Mynach in round one before matches with RGC, Scarlets and Cardiff Rugby.

All of their tries can be seen on the Dragons’ Facebook page (www.facebook.com/dragonsrugby.wales/).

Monmouth School for Boys head boy and No 8 Theo Mayell skippered Smith and the Warriors at Aylesbury as they secured a four-try bonus point triumph against Wasps Academy in the Premiership U18 League.

Warriors bounced back from a 40-13 home loss to Sale Sharks to lead 12-0 at the break thanks to Smith’s Hartpury College team-mate Alex Wills latching onto a cross-field kick to score, and a charge over by prop Lewys Walsh.

Try number three came shortly after the break as Will Couch was driven over from 20 metres out, with the conversion making it 19-0.

Wasps, who had won their opening two games, hit back with two tries to make it 19-14, but sub Dan Chambers came on to sneak over in the corner with 13 minutes to secure the win.
