Abergavenny RFC - 15
Garndiffaith RFC - 15
Abergavenny put the Six Nations behind them and resumed league action with the visit of age old rivals Garndiffaith to Bailey Park.
As the game kicked off the heavens’ opened and playing conditions immediately became very testing, but the away side seemed to adapt to this better than Abergavenny and were first on the score sheet.
The Garn scrum half broke away from a scrum on the twenty two and showed the Aber defence a clean pair of heels to score an unconverted try.
From the restart Abergavenny put themselves under more pressure and enabled the away side to gain a foot hold in home territory. After keeping the ball through several phases, the visitors’ winger scored a converted try to give the Garn a 12 point lead.
The home side now woke up and realised they had a game on their hands and began to play some controlled structured rugby putting the Garn under long periods of pressure.
Abergavenny’s scrum, with Staphnil, Williams and Morgan giving their opponents a torrid time, was now very dominant and enabled number eight Dan Horler to score an unconverted try. Abergavenny were soon back on the attack and after several strong line=out drives were awarded a penalty try, converted by Matthew Edwards, to make it 12-15 at half time.
In deteriorating weather conditions Abergavenny’s pack were now totally dominant but try as they might Abergavenny could not seem to cross the Garndiffaith line for that all important score and had to be content with a penalty goal by Rhodri Webster to level the scores.
As the game drew to a conclusion Abergavenny continued to pressurize the away side’s line but it was not to be and the match ended in a disappointing 15 all draw for the Bailey Park outfit of Matthew Edwards, Wil Williams, Matthew Sevenoaks, Gareth Beavan, Jacob Butler, Rhodri Webster, Sam Phillips, Dan Horler, Dan Beavan, Josh Hitchman, Fred Pursey, Dan Morris, Owen Staphnil, Gareth Williams and Ryan Morgan. Subs Ieuan James, Paul Cornock, Wil Evans, Garin Price and Dan Cox.
On Saturday Abergavenny are away to Cwmbran, and on Sunday afternoon at the club, there is an audience with Scott Quinell. Tickets are still available. Please contact Huw Beavan on 07809744336 for further information.
