HAVING gone down to a very heavy defeat at Belmont in June Raglan Park Golf Club Seniors were delighted by their improved form in the return match at Raglan winning by five matches to two.
Most of the matches were fairly close and winners were Ron Thomas playing with Paul Murphy, Richard Phillips and Don Jones, Don Holmes and Geoff Maynard, John Phelps and John Scannell, and Gwynne Jones and Neil Sansom with the final half point secured by Colin Guyton and Brian Owen.
Captain Stuart Bradley was pleased to avenge the away defeat and Raglan have now won more matches than they have lost during the season. Bradley is hoping that the form continues to the end of the year so that the Seniors can record their most successful year to date.
Three pairs from Raglan Park Golf Club seniors made it through to the final stages of the South Wales Claret Jug which was played last week.
Unfortunately none were able to claim the ultimate prize but all three came very close and once the disappointment had lessened they were very pleased with their respective performances.
The combination of Des Williams and Terry Davies came second with 42 points only losing on count back on the last six holes. The count back loss for Alan Bridges and Wyndham Tranter for third place was even tighter only losing on count back over the last three holes. The third pair of Gary French and Brian Lewis came fifth with 41 points.
Alan Bridges made the well known golfers comment, "If only my putt had rolled that little bit further... however that's life and congratulations to the winners. It was a great competition and we all thoroughly enjoyed the day."
The friendly team visited Southerndown on Tuesday hoping to repeat their successful trip last year. Unfortunately their hosts had a much stronger team this year and despite Raglan's best efforts exacted revenge with a 5-2 win.
The successful pairs for Raglan were Ron Thomas and Jim True and Richard Phillips and Don Holmes, the final half being gained by last years captain John Phelps playing with Martyn Richardson.
Captain Stuart Bradley said, "Hoping to avoid the commentator's curse Ron Thomas has had an amazingly successful season winning the vast majority of his matches so far – long may it continue."
